Important - Septic System Use Reminder for Residents

As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and functional waste management system in our community, we kindly ask for your attention regarding proper septic system usage. Our community uses a septic system, which operates differently than municipal pressurized sewer systems and requires extra care to avoid costly and damaging issues.

Septic (Gravity-Fed) System vs. Pressurized Sewer System

Septic systems rely on gravity to move waste into tanks and fields for natural breakdown. They are sensitive to what enters the system and do not process waste through a central treatment facility.

Sewer systems, typically found in urban settings, use pressure and extensive filtering to move and treat waste offsite.

While sewer systems can tolerate more (though they shouldn't!), septic systems cannot. Everything that enters our drains goes into our tanks - and stays there - unless it breaks down naturally.

This raises the common community costs of pumping out the excess buildup more often than is typically required.

Below are the items we tend to find in comparison to what is permissible.

Do Not Flush or Drain the Following:

These items have been found clogging pumps, damaging tanks, and creating hazardous conditions:

  • Fats, oils, grease (“FOG”) - causes fatbergs and clogs

  • Diapers and sanitary products

  • Wipes (even if labeled “flushable”)

  • Gloves, masks, and medical waste

  • Dog poop bags and plastic packaging

  • Clothing and large paper products (yes - even shirts have been found)

  • Powdered detergents – these solidify in the system and lead to blockages

Only flush or drain:

  • Human waste (urine and feces)

  • Small amounts of biodegradable toilet paper

  • Minimal use of septic-safe cleaning liquids

Why This Matters:

Improper disposal:

  • Burns out our expensive impellers and pump motors

  • Leads to overflows and field failures

  • Increases repair costs for everyone

  • Could result in shutdowns or fines

Let’s all do our part to protect our shared infrastructure. When in doubt - throw it out, don’t flush it!
